Disability Determination Service Backlog

The networks to file Social Security Disability claims are run through the Social Security Administration field offices and Disability Determination Service state agencies. This can be an overwhelming process if you are injured and trying to navigate the system alone, and it can take months to receive an application approval or denial. Here, we explain the backlog for disability claims.

Disability Backlog Cases Skyrocket

On April 7, 2022, Social Security Administration (SSA) reopened a majority of its field offices to the public after two years of being closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Disability Determination Services (DDS) backlog exceeded over one million cases at the end of February 2022. It was reported to have 797,783 initial and 212,981 at the reconsideration level, totaling to about 1,010,764. The biggest DDS backlogs are in:

  • Texas (101,841)
  • Florida (95,168)
  • California (66,331)
  • New York (44,051)
  • Georgia (42,047)

These backlogs indicate more than five cases pending per every thousand residents.

The Problem with Disability Backlog

SSD benefits are available to individuals who suffer from a disability or medical conditions and are unable to work for a year or more. The backlog of Social Security disability claims becomes a problem because the longer a person waits for approval, the longer they go without income. If they are not working, they continue to suffer from the lack of SSD benefits for months on end without the ability to pay for rent, utilities, food, and other financial commitments.
