Are You Struggling to Access Your Social Security Account?

There are several ways for an individual to run into issues when attempting to access their Social Security account. The most common issues involve a forgotten username, password, or security question, while other issues might involve difficulties logging into an account overseas.

When situations like these occur, there are safety measures in place to protect you and your confidential information. If you are struggling to access your Social Security account and don’t see your dilemma listed below, consider reaching out to a member of our team for assistance.

How to Recover Your Username

To recover your username, you will need the email address you used to create your account, your Social Security number, and your date of birth. Head to the Sign In page and select “Forgot Username?” Once you enter the information above, your username will automatically appear in the field for you.

How to Recover Your Password and Answers to Security Questions

You can gain a temporary password through the Social Security sign-in page by entering your username, Social Security number, and date of birth. Then, select “Next” to answer your Password Reset Questions. If you remember the answers to your security questions, type the answers into the text boxes. Additionally, you must confirm your phone number or email address to receive a one-time security code. Enter the security code you receive, and you’ll be able to edit your information.

If you don’t remember the answers to your Password Reset Questions, select “I can’t remember my answers” and follow the prompts. You may be asked for your email address or cell phone number to complete the two-step verification process. For more information on this process, visit the Social Security website.

What to do if Your Account Gets Locked

Don’t panic! When your information is entered falsely or inconsistently too many times, Social Security will lock your account to protect your confidential information. The log-in system assumes someone is attempting to commit fraud as a fail-safe against identity theft. If you are locked out of your account and need assistance, you can visit the Social Security help desk.

Blocking Access to My Account

Every person has the ability to control access to their Social Security record, such as electronic access and automated telephone services. Once access is blocked, neither you nor anyone else can see or change your personal information online or over the phone. Services like this can help victims of domestic violence or identity theft feel better protected. If you would like to block or unblock access to your record, you can call your local Social Security office or find it using the Office Locator.

Accessing Your Account Overseas

People with an overseas APO/FPO/DPO address or a United States mailing address can create a personal Social Security account. You can also create a Single Sign-On through ID.me, which meets the US government’s meticulous requirements and authorization for proof and authentication of identity. Visit the Social Security account set up page to create an ID.me account.
